  • Accounts Payable/AP
    The department within a brokerage responsible for the set up and pay of carrier invoices.
  • Back Haul
    A return load. Many companies, often ones who haul their own product, take a load from their home location to a certain area the country, then they need to go back to the original location to pick up another similar load.   • Berth
    Sleeping compartment behind the cab.
  • BI Insurance
    Bodily Injury insurance. Protects you from paying for these expenses out of pocket, but also pays for your legal defense if you are sued as a result of your involvement in an accident.
  • Bill of Lading
    Shipping documents or shipping papers for a particular shipment. It contains an itemized list of goods included in the shipment. It also serves as a contract of shipment and as a receipt for the goods.
  • Bobtail
    The tractor operating without a trailer attached.
    Bill of Lading (or Laden)/Proof of Delivery, these terms are usually interchangeable.
  • Bond/Surety Bond
    A required insurance every brokerage must carry in order to obtain their brokerage authority. If a broker does not want to pay an invoice we have the option to File on the Bond. This means that we place a claim against their authority and they have no more than 45 days to respond to the(...)
  • Broker
    A person who sets up loads for their customer and contracts the carrier to move the freight.
  • Bulk Freight
    Freight that is not in packages or containers; normally hauled in tankers, grain trailers, and sometimes in regular van trailers.
  • Bunk
    Sleeping compartment behind the cab.
  • Cargo Insurance
    The method used in protecting shipments from physical damage or theft. In fact, insuring cargo ensures that the value of goods is protected against potential losses which may occur during air, sea, or land transportation.
  • Carrier
    A trucking company or individual owner-operator that transports goods.
  • CDL
    Commercial Driver License
  • Claim
    A situation where there is damaged or missing product, temperature variations outside of set limits, or when a deliver is late or failed service or any other situation where the payment is being held for issues that arose during the loading, unloading, or hauling of freight.
  • Common Carrier
    A company that will carry freight for any customer.
  • Consignee
    Destination of a specific portion of a load, also known as the “Receiver”.
  • CPM
    Cents Per Mile
  • Credit Alert
    A non-payment alert from a carrier or factor stating a broker is not paying within set payment term limits.
  • CSA (Compliance, Safety, Accountability)
    It is the safety compliance and enforcement program of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) that holds motor carriers and drivers accountable for their role in safety.
  • Customer
    The shipper, usually referred to the by the broker as their customer.
  • Deadhead
    Driving a tractor-trailer without cargo, or without a paying load.
  • Delivery Paperwork
    Paperwork packet containing BOL/POD, rate confirmation, invoices, NOA and other needed paperwork for the load. It can also include scale tickets, lumper receipts, and other paperwork requested by the broker.
  • Detention
    Extra driver pay for time spent waiting at a customer facility.
  • Dispatcher
    A person whose job is to receive messages and organize the movement of trucks. Dispatchers find ‘loads’ for trucks and communicate with drivers during the load.
  • Doubles
    A truck with two trailers.
  • Drayage
    Carrying freight a short distance as part of a longer trip. For example, a tractor picking up freight from a rail yard and carrying it 50 miles to it's final destination.
  • E-Log (ELD)
    A computerized system to keep track of driver hours of service and miles. The carrier and dispatcher have instant access to this information, which improves their ability to schedule drivers appropriately. The federal government favors the use of E-Logs over traditional hand-written logs.
  • EDI
    Electronic Document Interchange. An electronic system for sharing transportation-related documents like bills of lading.   
  • Factor
    Us at CarrierNet. A Factor can also be used by brokerages. It refers to a company who assists carriers and brokers with bookwork, accounting, and other necessary processes to keep a business running.
  • Flatbed
    An open trailer used for carrying construction materials, equipment, and other objects of unusual size and shape.

  • Freight Lane
    The route, often an Interstate or major highway, on which a great amount of freight flows back and forth. If you work for a company which uses regular freight lanes, it will be beneficial to your home time if you live on or near one of these freight lanes.
  • GAAP
    Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • GAWR
    Gross Axle Weight Rating
  • GCW
    Gross Combination Weight
  • Governor
    A device that limits a truck's maximum speed.
  • Hazmat
    Hazardous Materials
  • Hot Shot
    A small truck that generally carries smaller and time-sensitive loads.
  • Hours-Of-Service
    FMCSA safety regulations governing how long and when drivers may be on duty and driving.
  • IFTA
    Simply stated, IFTA works as a "pay now or pay later" system. As commercial motor vehicles buy fuel, any fuel taxes paid are credited to that licensee's account. At the end of the fiscal quarter, the licensee completes their fuel tax report, listing all miles traveled in all participating(...)
  • Insurance
    Several meanings depending on the party speaking. Common insurance we deal with are Surety Bonds for brokerages and cargo insurance (carrier insurance) for carriers.
  • Intermodal
    A single trailer or container that encounters multiple forms of transportation along it's route, such as truck/ship/rail.
  • International Registration Plan (IRP)
    A reciprocity agreement among states of the US, the District of Columbia, and provinces of Canada which recognizes the registration of commercial motor vehicles registered by other jurisdictions.
  • Invoice
    Breakdown of billing charges including names of carriers, brokerages, load numbers, rates and other information pertaining to the load. Every set of delivery paperwork should have 2 invoices, one from CNGF the other provided from the carrier. The CNGF invoice is created in Truckwin, if the(...)
  • Invoice Number
    A number issued when the Freight Bill is created. This is not the load number; this is a separate number created when the invoice is created. This is sometimes called a ProNumber in trucking.
  • Key Rec
    A sticker given upon delivery required by larger corporations such as Costco and Walmart. Key Recs are typically placed on the back of the BOL for the delivery.
  • Lessee
    A company that pays money to use someone else's property.
  • Lessor
    A company that owns the property someone is paying to use.
  • Linehaul
    Moving freight from one point to another.
  • Load
    A load, commonly called a trip, consists of a Bill To:  Customer, Origin, and Destination. It is not to be confused with an invoice, which is created in Freight Billing. Loads are entered into Dispatch and may or may not have a driver assigned to them.
  • Load Number
    A number assigned to a load that prints on both a carrier confirmation and a customer confirmation. This is not the invoice number. The load number is created in Dispatch and once it is billed, it will have a separate load number and a separate invoice number. Sometimes called a Trip Number.
  • Logistics
    The art and science of getting people and materials where they need to be when they need to be there.
  • Long-Haul
    Long distance driving.
  • LTL (Less-Than-Truckload)
    A quantity of freight less than that required for the application of a truckload rate, usually less than 10,000 pounds. These smaller loads are consolidated by an LTL carrier into one vehicle headed for multiple destinations.
  • Lumper
    Casual laborers who load and unload trailers for a fee.
  • Lumper Receipt
    A receipt showing the carrier has paid the unloading charges at the receiving facility for unloading the load from the truck.
  • Notice of Assignment/NOA
    A signed document showing the carrier factors and assigning bills to pay to and ONLY to CNGF. This needs to be attached to each invoice in order to notify brokers of where payment is to remit to.
  • Operating Authority
    Motor carriers for-hire must apply for the authority to engage in interstate commerce with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
  • OTR
    Over The Road, long-haul trucking.
  • Owner Operator
    A trucker who owns or leases his own truck(s).
  • Paid Over Assignment
    When a broker pays the carrier directly in error, this is technically illegal but is usually done by mistake. If you can prove the broker received a NOA and stamped invoice you can demand payment.
  • P&D
    Pickup and delivery.
  • PD Insurance
    Property Damage Liability coverage. If an insured person is legally liable for an accident, Property Damage Liability coverage pays for damage to others' property resulting from the accident. Property Damage Liability coverage also pays for legal defense costs if you are sued.
  • Private Carrier
    A business which uses its own trucks to transport its own products and/or raw materials.
  • Promise to Pay/PTP
    When a broker agrees that the invoice is set up and ready to pay on a specific day, this usually fulfills the obligations we have to make collection calls until the payment date passes.
  • ProNumber
    Another word for Invoice Number. You may see this printed on the invoice itself.
  • Proof of Delivery (POD)
    A signed document, usually the Bill of Lading, that documents the delivery of a load.
  • Rate Confirmation
    The agreement/contract between the broker and carrier to complete the move within a specified time frame for a set amount of money.
  • Receiver
    Destination of a load (also known as the consignee or ship to).
  • Reefer
    A refrigerated trailer.
  • Shag
    A local delivery, or trailer movement.
  • Ship to
    The final destination of the load (also known as the receiver or consignee).
  • Shipper
    The company requesting to move the load, also known as “direct shipper" if no broker is involved.
  • Sleeper
    The space behind the truck's cab.
  • SMS (Safety Measurement System)
    Uses data from roadside inspections and crash reports from the last two years, and data from investigations, to identify and intervene with motor carriers that pose the greatest risk to safety.
  • Straight Truck
    A truck with the cargo area attached.
  • Team
    When two drivers work together so one can sleep while the other one drives, allowing freight to move as fast as possible while staying within federal hours of service regulations.
  • TMS (Transportation Management System)
    A software platform that is designed to streamline the processes of trucking companies. Truckwin is an example of this.
  • Tractor
    A truck made to pull the trailer.
  • Trip Number
    A number assigned to a load that prints on both a carrier confirmation and a customer confirmation. This is not the invoice number. The trip number is created in Dispatch and once it is billed, it will have a separate trip number and a separate invoice number. Sometimes called a Load Number.
  • Truck Ordered Not Used/TONU
    When a truck is assigned to a load and is no longer needed when arriving to the shipper facility. Usually $150 or $250. Does not require BOL/POD.
  • UCR (Unified Carrier Registration)
    It is a federally mandated system for registering operators of commercial vehicles who are involved in interstate and international travel. This does not apply to intrastate travel.
  • USDOT Number
    A unique identification number issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to identify the company when conducting inspections, audits, and investigations.
